EXPERIENCE
THE EARL GREY SAXES
BIOG.
Musical Beginnings
Based in the Scottish Borders, the Earl Grey Saxes are made up members of the Borders Big Band Sax Section: Paul Cormie, Sam Lord, Ewan Mitchell, Simon McCann and Camille Castledine, along with our very talented multi tasking support Cath Cormie on everything from violin to the kitchen sink. We have been playing in the big band and in other groups together for years and that coupled with our love of 'posh tea' and homemade cake gave Paul the idea to form us into a group. It turned out to be the best idea ever...we get to drink tea, eat cake and enjoy playing a wide variety of music. We must be doing something right because people keep asking us to come and play for various events. We were part of the Berwick Sound Waite and Sea Project which included a specially commissioned piece for us from Ailie Robertson by Strongback Productions and also part of great Song of the North. We were part of the Steampunk Themed Metal Baroque Gig also in The Maltings in conjunction with singers from Rocket Opera which we thoroughly enjoyed.
We gave the first performance of an arrangement of Bernard Hermann's Psycho as part of 'the Earl Greys at the Movies' concert in The Maltings.
2020 things were quiet until...
We were lucky enough to be asked in December to play in front of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as part of Here for Culture and managed to play outdoors giving performances for care homes and others
2021
We carried on with outdoor rehearsals and performances as well as an online interview with one of the local first schools. We went on to play as part of GlastonBerwick too!
We also gave a Christmas Concert for Memory Laners a local music and activity group for dementia sufferers and their carers.
2022
Was another exciting year filled with lots of opportunities including our fourth visit to North Yorkshire
Onwards
We are looking forward to 2023 one of the highlights being asked to be the musicians for the specially commissioned choral premiere of Thomas the Rhymer composed by Chris Achenbach at Berwick Singfest in May
One day we may just get around to a recording if we can find the time!

Sam also writes and arranges most of the music we play. Our repertoire is definitely diverse including Guns N’ Roses Sweet Child O’ Mine, Bach and an arrangement of Polly Put the Kettle on! We play a range of styles from folk to jazz and some well known favourites such as Pink Panther, Teddy Bears' Picnic and Mission Impossible and we even come with props. We are happy to tailor make what we do to any situation or theme

A testimonial too:
We used the Earl Greys four our wedding. They played for our drink’s reception and in the church to making our day Magical! The personal professional service with beautifully arranged and performed pieces of our choice meant every guest felt special. I loved walking down the aisle to a personally arranged piece I had chosen, and they entertained our guests while waiting for the bride to arrive with style. Then also playing at our drinks reception and making it a truly enjoyable experience to remember. Our guests sang and danced to well-known music individually chosen by us, expertly played with expression and joy. We both recommend using this band, making our memorable day extra special.
